I have a harbor freight 33686 mill that I am in the process of converting. I have a 3 axis hobby cnc driver and 3 steppers from kelinginc. The steppers are rated at 304 oz/in unipolar, 425 bi-polar. My power supply is 28V@18 Amps. My ballscrews are all 5mm pitch. Are these steppers going to be strong enough? Do I need to spring for a bi-polar controller?
Starting from Dan Mauch's approach, I am progressing through a CNC conversion of the Harbor Freight 33686 mill-drill. Here is a page I made on the Y-axis mount:
Apr 8, 2013. Messages. 1,494. Nov 12, 2019. #1. I rolled the dice with a Harbor Freight Mill Drill 33686 and crapped out. The motor bearings are screaming with less than 2 hours on the machine. By the time I built my table and started using the mill the 90 day warrantee (I thought it was a year) was up and they want $212.00 for another motor.

I had used a huge Bridgeport in my youth working summers in my dad's factory so I have some experience. Came with a bunch of R8 collets, a bunch of tooling that is barely used, a so-so vise, and some other miscellaneous tooling.

Shipping weight: 706 lbs. ITEM 33686-3VGA. $999.99 $899.99 . The price was right so I can't complain, and the machine is incredibly heavy, indicating a ton of cast iron was used to make it. I drove 1.5 hours to the Brick, NJ Harbor Freight store and they forklifted it into the back of my crewcab.
After this weekend, I should be the proud owner of a Harbor Freight 33686 mill-drill, for $700. This is a pretty stout unit, weight 750 pounds, so I will have to do some thinking about how to move it. I will be welding up my own stand for it, probably 1.5 inch square tubing legs with a 1/4 inch thick top.

CNC a Harbor Freight 33686 The Hobby-Machinist. Jun 12, 2019 I'd recommend against it. The effort of converting a manual mill to CNC isn't trivial, and starting with a round column mill means you're going to end up with a white elephant when you're done.
To answer Bill Vance's question, my mill is a Harbor Freight 33686 Mill/Drill (although mine is 2 HP insted of the 1 1/2 HP one they're selling now) Tom, thanks. I bought my ballscrews and nuts from Reid Tool (800-253-0421).Their prices are a few cents more than McMaster-Carr but their service is good and very fast (in fact, I'm buying from them at work now as well - they typically ship the ...

25. Apr 1, 2014. #1. Looks like someone local is selling a HF 33686 with a bit of tooling. I've been watching for a small knee mill or maybe a square column bench model from Grizzly, but this one might do most of what I'd like to do. I do some hobby gunsmithing, small engine work, and used to have access to a very similar machine through work ...
I looked it up in Harbor Freight and it sells for $1499 now so the asking price of $650 seems too good to let it slip away. This one has a 2hp reversible motor where the ones on the website are showing a 1-1/2hp motor. I got the R8 collets and the …

Hi Folks, I've seen several Harbor Freight 33686 and Grizzly G1005 mill/drill CNC conversions that used Geko steppers controllers or servo motors. Has anyone converted these or similar sized mills using the Keling controllers and stepper motor package? I would like to use their 495 in-oz motor package but am not sure if it will work. I have not come across anyone who has used Keling kits to ...
These permanently hold the end mill so it can't slide out and ruin your work. I have lots of sizes of end mills, mostly bought at flea markets, so a complete set of holders comes in handy. If you're buying them new, you could get by with just a 3/8" holder, because I think almost all …
